What is a Keyboard?
A keyboard is an input device used to enter data into a computer, laptop, tablet, or other digital devices. With the help of a keyboard, users can type letters, numbers, symbols, and commands. It is one of the most important parts of a computer system and is widely used for writing documents, searching on the internet, coding, gaming, and communication.
History of the Keyboard
The keyboard was developed from the typewriter, which was used in earlier times to write text on paper. When computers were invented, the typewriter keys were adapted for digital use. Over time, keyboards improved in design, speed, and comfort. Today, modern keyboards come with advanced features such as wireless connectivity, backlighting, and programmable keys.
Main Parts of a Keyboard
A standard keyboard is divided into several sections:
1. Alphabet Keys
These keys include letters from A to Z. They are used for typing words, sentences, and paragraphs. This section is the most frequently used part of the keyboard.
2. Number Keys
Number keys include 0 to 9. They are used for calculations, entering phone numbers, prices, and other numerical data.
3. Function Keys
Function keys are labeled F1 to F12 and are located at the top of the keyboard. Each function key performs a special task depending on the software being used. For example, F1 is often used for help.
4. Control Keys
Control keys include Ctrl, Alt, Shift, and Windows key. These keys are mostly used in combination with other keys to perform shortcuts and special commands.
5. Navigation Keys
These keys include Arrow keys, Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down. They are used to move the cursor on the screen.
6. Numeric Keypad
Some keyboards have a numeric keypad on the right side. It is mainly used for fast number entry and calculations.
